Harbin University of Science and Technology
(HUST) is the largest province-owned engineering university
in Heilongjiang Province, located in the Ice City of Harbin — a
picturesque city in the northeast of China.
HUST was founded in the early 1950s. After half a century’s
development it has become a multidisciplinary university
whose discipline layout is featured with electromechanical
engineering as its lead as well as an integration of science
and engineering, economy, management, humanities, and law.
It boasts four campuses:East Campus, West Campus,
South Campus, and North Campus in three districts: Daoli,
Nangang, and Dongli, covering over 1,275,000m2, with a
total building area of more than 850,000m2, its fixed assets
being ¥1.032 billion RMB. The library has a collection
of 2.075 million books and about 4,900 Chinese and foreign
journals and periodicals.
From 1996 to 2000 our university seized the opportunity
of higher education system reform, and set up the talent
cultivation system from bachelors to masters and from doctors
to post-doctors. The school running layout focuses on undergraduate
education, quickening postgraduate education, and steadily
developing continual education. HUST now has 16 colleges,
5 teaching departments and 4 training centers, offering
45 bachelor-degree programs, 47 master-degree programs
as well as 8 engineering master degrees, 2 first-rate doctor-degree
programs, 13 secondary doctor-degree programs, 2 postdoctoral
stations, 8 provincial key subjects, 10 provincial key
specialties, 4 provincial key labs. So far the total number
of students has reached 26,117 in varied categories, including
Ph. D. students, postgraduates, undergraduates, junior
college students, foreign students, etc. The total number
of full-time teachers is 1,337, of whom 671 are associate
professors or professors, one being a national academician.
For many years, to conform to national economy and social
development and to take the advantage of talents, HUST
has set up 45 research institutes guided by the strategy
of emphasizing subject development, teaching and research.
From 1996 to now, the university has undertaken over 1,951
state and provincial projects with 900 research results
(183 winning prizes). We have won the second rate of 2001
State Technological Invention Award and the second rate
of 2004 State Technological Progress Award. The university
has published more than 5,770 academic papers, 386 books
in special subjects. Insisting on opening to the outside,
seizing the opportunity of reforming old industrial bases
in the northeast of China, and following the course of
manufacturing, learning and researching, HUST has set up
bases of research result cultivation to transform the results
into productive forces and cooperate with local governments.
The development of research has not only supported the
building of subjects and enhanced the university’s
academic level, but also contributed much to the economic
construction of HeilongjiangProvince. HUST has won many
honorable titles or prizes from the provincial government
and HarbinCity for revitalizing economy and the city through
science and technology.
The university has always been engaged in international
academic exchanges and cooperation. It has established
long-term friendly cooperation with many universities or
research institutes in more than 10 countries. Substantial
achievements have been made in regard to teaching and learning,
scientific research and cultivation of talented personnel.
HUST has jointly run school with the following foreign
universities: TroyStateUniversity (America), Oriental New
Mexican University, PittsburgUniversity, LondonCityUniversity
(Britain), NovosibirskStateTechnicalUniversity (Russia),
EdithCowanUniversity (Australia), ChubuUniversity (Japan),
CapilanoCollege (Canada), etc.
For more than half a century, HUST has kept up the practice
of “Unity, Progress, Practicality and Creativity”,
and has cultivated many excellent personnel for the country’s
manufacturing industries and other positions. The graduates
are well welcomed and praised for their qualities and capacity,
many of whom have become the backbone in technical field
or leadership in medium or large enterprises.
